Corn crop area reaches 17% of RS

Planted areas earlier have good productivity levels

Corn crop area reaches 17% of RS

The corn crop in Rio Grande do Sul took off this week, with an increase of six percentage points from last week, and reached 17% in the area, according to a survey of the technical service department and Rural Extension (Emater / RS ). The technicians of the institution note that the maturation process also occurs more rapidly, "with 25% of the areas ready for harvest."

In the weekly bulletin juncture, the gauchos technical report that the yields obtained so far, both in grain and silage, have pleased the producers, who are reaping amounts well above expectations. "These are crops that were planted earlier and were out of the phases of flowering and grain filling when the drought occurred in early December and therefore suffered no losses," they say.

In the opinion of technicians, which worries the producers at the moment is the situation of the areas that are still in vegetative growth and flowering (risk phases), as these crops can be reduced in production potential, if rains fail to keep soil moisture at satisfactory levels. However, they note that for now the information they realize that there is not significantly greater reductions in expectations.
