Corn: China opens the door to Brazilian cereal

China now has a protocol that opens the doors of the country to the corn produced in Brazil. According to information from the newspaper Gazeta do Povo, the Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock and Supply (MAPA) received a document that describes phytosanitary parameters to release the cereal trade between countries.

Corn: China opens the door to Brazilian cereal

The purchase of Brazilian corn by Chinese happens depending on the cereal shortage threat domestically. Only in the last five harvests corn consumption registered an increase of 50 million tons in the country.

China has one of the world's biggest corn production, with estimated harvest 193 million tons of grain in the 2012/13 season. Imports of the Asian giant three years ago did not reach 1 million tons, but last season reached 5 million tonnes and this year should reach the milestone of 7 million tons, a year in which Brazil will have 10 million tons of corn available for export.

China, which also locks negotiations for export of Argentine corn, should send representatives to the country this month to discuss the varieties accepted for marketing. The deliberations with the neighboring country should serve as a parameter for Brazil. Still, should only be accepted varieties already approved for Chinese consumption.

According to information from the CEO of Abramilho (Brazilian Association of Corn Growers) in an interview with newspaper Gazeta do Povo, Brazil is able to meet the phytosanitary requirements of China and gain market share across the US corn. "The United States does not have enough corn to send out. Argentina is a major exporter, but also has no large volume. China should raise the minimum requirements as possible, because you need to replenish their stocks, "he says.
