Climate endangers planting corn at low harvest

US government representatives in Brazil bet on production of 76 million tons of grain

Climate endangers planting corn at low harvest

The US Department of Agriculture considers that there are risks for planting maize second crop in Brazil, due to weather problems in the summer harvest. The information is in a report released this week by the USDA representatives in the country.

They point out that the desvaforável weather delayed the planting of soybeans and must leave the rate at harvest below normal until the first two weeks of this month. "Corn second crop is planted right after the soybean harvest. So if the soybean harvest is later rains, the planting of corn second crop can become more risky, "says the document.

Still, attaches USDA projected a production of 76 million tons of corn in Brazil in 2014/2015 harvest. In a previous report, released at the end of September last year, the forecast was 75 million.

The current number is down 4% compared to the 2013/2014 harvest. A reduction considered "very dramatic" and limited by factors such as a relative improvement in grain prices and the dollar's appreciation against the real, which favors exports, estimated at 21.5 million tonnes.
