China: Corn deficit may increase in coming years, says agency

On Friday, the Chinese news agency Xinhua reported that the maize deficit in the country may worsen in the coming years, reflecting an increase in demand for grain processing.

The agency also said that consumption would exceed the available stock. Some national newspapers claim that this deficit may reach 20 million tons in 2020.

The balance between supply and demand of cereal seems to be reaching the limits in China, explained deputy director of the office of the Center of the State Council Development Research, Cheng Guoqiang.

Since 2008, domestic demand for corn has already increased by 40% to somewhere between 45 million and 50 million tons. Thus, corn imports from the Asian nation could already increase this year compared to 5 million tonnes imported last year.
